Entry and Exit Pages

Entry pages are any page that brings traffic to your website. They are usually well optimized for popular keywords and have inbound-links. They may have been posted on blogs or forums. An entry page can be anywhere on your website.

While many sites are focussed around the homepage as a site adds content it begins to build sections of themed content centered around hubs. This hubs are effectively home pages in their own right. They concentrate internal links and should target the most popular and competitive keywords appropriate to the theme. It should be possible to navigate to the rest of the site from the entry page, in particular to pages within the theme and to the home page where other hubs should be reachable. The site branding should be obvious. The term is also used to describe doorway or jump pages.

An exit page is the last page a user visits before leaving the site. You can't expect a user to stay on one website for ever so it is normal that they will head off at some point, either through an outbound-link or by going to a site they've bookmarked or entered directly into the toolbar. There may be some reason why a user exits the site, maybe the page does not link to other interesting content. The route a user takes from the entry to exit page is called a path.
