Analysis of Google's Florida Update

Immediately after the update some people noticed that putting one or two nonsense terms after the search results caused Google to deliver very different search results. For example a search for: 'digital cameras' returns about 8 million results but 'digital cameras dkjfdlajd' returns nothing because our nonsense word 'dkjfdlajd' can't be found in any page. If we now search for the original term but specifically exclude our nonsense word:

    digital cameras -dkjfdlajd

We would expect that excluding a word that does not occur anywhere in the Google index would have no effect on results but in fact they appeared similar to those given before the Florida update. This glitch was patched by Google in early December although the Scroogle site <www.scroogle.org> still has a page that claims it can show pre-Florida search results using another loophole.
