Press Releases

One traditional method of at least making people aware of your shiny new website is to write a press release. This should mention the website's URL, contact details and give some interesting information about the site and products. Linked with a promotion this could get some publicity from eZines, related websites, forums and blogs. Use search engines to find related sites that use your target keywords and send your release to the press contact or webmaster.

Cross Linking

Perhaps the simplest method of getting inbound-links is cross-linking with other sites. Use the information above as the starting point for other sites to contact. Cross-linking has fallen into some disrepute with some SEO experts of late. In terms of PageRank it rarely has better than a neutral impact and unscrupulous sites can implement schemes to hoard their PageRank. Excessive cross-links, especially with unrelated sites, may even be indistinguishable from a link farm and could be a component in getting a site banned. Compared to natural links in content pages lists of links rarely feed more than a trickle of visitors. However they can be a source of keyword rich anchor text and can direct search engines into the site.

Relevant Anchor Text

Relevant anchor text is probably one of the main areas where inbound-links fail to live up to their potential. You should provide potential link partners with the anchor text and description that you would like them to use when linking to your site. Otherwise the link will often just be some version of the domain name. Don't hesitate to ask people linking to your site to modify the anchor text. This should ideally correspond to the content of the page being linked to and should target the main target keywords of the site.
