Next: Page Rank Solutions to Page Jacking[update 25 March 2005] There are some reports that people with hijacked pages have been able to get them removed using the Google URL controller and giving the hijacked page URL. This makes some sense as the 302 redirect used by page jackers means that the page has moved temporarily, therefore it is reasonable to be able tell Google to drop the page. It is not clear whether the Google robot will reindex the Page Jacker's site at a later date or if the instructions to the URL Controller will take precidence. Digital Millennium Copyright Act and Search EnginesThe Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DCMA) was introduced by the United States to comply with World Trade Organisation treaties covering intellectual property. The DCMA affords search engines and ISPs some protection if they are found to be inadvertently hosting or indexing material that infringes someone's copyright. However to benefit from that protection they must remove the material or reference if notified of the fact by the copyright holder. Search engines have different procedures for enforcing copyright infringements.
