A: It is a fair comment. If you type in Search Engine Optimization Book into Google you will see that there are around 37 million sites, at the time of writing this site is in 15th place. Which seems pretty good given that it is a relatively new website. If you put the words in quotes this site is in 5th place.

However if you buy a copy of the book you will discover the truth behind rankings. Few users bother to go beyond the top 20 and the number of clicks through drop very rapidly with ranking. Q: Don't these SEO books go out of date real quick?

A: Yes, they are often only as good as the next algorithm change. A: Nah, they are just annoyed their sites have been relegated from the index. SEO will never die. Even if search engines had a perfect understanding of a website's content there would be work for copyrighters who could craft better content than the next guy. We are still a long way from that. In addition most websites that I see are a long way from optimized and could do with just the basics - consistent themes, interlinking, formatting.
