SERPS

SERPS stands for Search Engine Results Pages (or Positioning). That is the set of links returned by a search engine in response to a user query. Search engines may display different types of listing in their results, these can include:

  • Search results from their index.
  • Sponsored links and Content Targeted Advertising. The separation with search results is not always clear.
  • Listings from human compiled directories such as Yahoo! directory and the Open Directory Project (DMOZ)

Usually between 10 to 20 links are shown on each results page. Research has shown that 80% of users do not search beyond the second page of results so it is vital to rank highly for target keywords and to have a title and description that is enticing to searchers. For example Google displays the page Title then the first block of text containing the keywords. Other search engines select text from the top of the page or use the Meta Description tag.

The SERPS acronym is frequently used by people in the search engine community who may refer to the SERP (keyword and results) that they are targetting. A website's position within SERPS for a given keyword or phrase is an indicator of the success of their search engine optimization strategy.
