Analyzing Keywords and Phrases

Most analysis tools will report on the keywords and phrases that were used to find your site. These can be broken down by search engine. This information is useful to show how successful your site is for your target keywords and whether you need to make some special optimizations for certain search engines.

If your site ranks the top ten search results for certain keywords and WordTracker and Overture show that these keywords are popular, and yet there is little or no search engine traffic, there may be a problem with the description displayed with the results. Consider modifying the Title, first Heading and sentence of the web page or update the META description tag. Sites that spam these tags can rank highly but get few click throughs because it is evident to users from the description that they are manipulating the search results.

Again a campaign for new keywords should monitor both the increase in site rankings and the number of users finding the site using those keywords as a search engine query. The percentages arriving from each search engine should approximate to search engine usage.
