Log files can be used to answer the following questions

Whether the website is being visited by a particular search engine
What are the most popular pages on the site
Which pages are causing problems, for example single access and exit pages
Which missing pages are being requested
Where is the website traffic coming from - remote sites, search engines, geographic locations
What search keywords are used to find the site

If log files are archived for each month they can also be used to identify problems that can occur with the site and to judge the effects of advertising, link and keyword campaigns.
